TL; DR#
If the Bank of China branch in your area does not provide a dynamic password (the device with a small screen), then you will definitely need to enter your password every time you make a payment through Apple Pay.
Problem Encountered#
When using Apple Pay (the "Wallet" app on the iPhone) for payment, a six-digit payment password is required for Bank of China cards, while other banks (at least Agricultural Bank of China and China Merchants Bank) do not require it.
Theoretical Method#
In theory, in the Bank of China Mobile Banking app's Apple Pay, after selecting any card and clicking on the "i" in the lower right corner, you can enter the settings page for that card, where you can see a switch for small amount password-free payment. As long as we can turn on this option, we can avoid entering the password - is it really that simple?
Frustration#
If you try to turn on this switch, you will encounter the following two error messages:
- "No matching security tool PB123" This error occurs when the mobile shield is not enabled.
- "No security tool that meets the conditions" This error occurs when the mobile shield is enabled.
From the error messages, it seems that the account does not have a suitable security tool. However, the error still occurs even when the mobile shield is enabled, which is confusing, as the mobile shield is currently the strongest security guarantee for Bank of China cards.
A Turnaround#
Searching online, I found a post by a user on a forum who also encountered this problem and has already solved it: he said that after obtaining a dynamic password for the card, the switch for password-free payment in Apple Pay can be turned on. The so-called dynamic password is a small device with a small LCD screen displaying a six-digit number as a verification method.
After seeing this post, I also went to a branch and inquired about the situation.
Hopeless Solution#
At the branch, I found the branch manager and asked how to enable password-free payment in Apple Pay. He was very surprised when he heard that the error message "No security tool that meets the conditions" still appeared after enabling the mobile shield, and he said he didn't know what to do. When I mentioned that a dynamic password might be needed, he said that the mobile shield should have completely replaced the dynamic password and they no longer provide services for obtaining a dynamic password. He also felt helpless in my situation.
Conclusion#
- Apple Pay has very little presence in China, and hardly anyone has mentioned this issue with Bank of China. To be honest, for major services in China, I have only seen Apple Pay supported by apps in the Meituan system.
- Bank of China does have some oversights when it comes to phasing out outdated services and similar situations, as a feature requires an already outdated service to be used.
